IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT BLOOD DONATION

  • The WHO recommends that each country should obtain approximately 5 million donations annually, preferably on a voluntary basis, however, in Mexico we are far from that goal, with a record of 1 million 700 thousand in 2017.

  • Most of the donations in Mexico are replacement donations, requested from relatives of patients who require blood for medical interventions, therefore, in our country there is no culture of voluntary blood donation.

  • Blood is a liquid tissue that cannot be replaced by another substance, so the only way to replace it is through donation.

  • Blood may be required due to acute losses (accidents), surgeries, or diseases.

  • The main reasons why Mexicans do not donate are:

  • Fear or distrust
  • Lack of culture
  • Lack of interest
  • Lack of time
  • Because a family member does not need it

  • There are more than 550 blood banks in Mexico, of which 47% are in the private sector, 25% in the public sector, 26% in the social security sector, 1% in the military and 1% in the Red Cross.
