Cardiology

“In the end, the only one who cares about you having a good heart, is your cardiologist.”

Vox Populi

Cardiology is the medical specialty that deals with the study,  diagnostics and treatment of illnesses related to the heart and circulatory system in general, including arteries, veins, blood and heart rate.

The heart of an average adult beats more than 100,000 times a day, pumping blood through the blood vessels (arteries, arterioles and capillaries), transporting the vital oxygen and nutrients to all the body so that each organ may correctly perform its functions.  Back from its trajectory through other blood vessels (capillaries, venues and veins) the blood returns with waste products from every organ (liver, kidneys, intestines, etc.). This blood is cleansed through the lungs where it releases collected carbon dioxide and is recharged with oxygen in order to return to the heart and start the whole process again.

All components in the circulatory system in perfect balance and interconnected to each other; for this reason, when a problem arises somewhere in the circulatory system, any organ could be compromised.

It is of utmost importance that a specialist be consulted in order to treat any possible anomaly should there be any affliction or suspicion of cardiovascular disease. To this end, not only is the cardiologist important but also a good evaluation from emergency physicians’ who, upon detecting warning signs, are able to appropriately refer to the right specialist.
