“How magical it is for your body to be regulated by electrical and chemical processes! Hormones are the perfect balance between the mystical and the scientific .”

Endocrinology is a branch of medicine that studies the endocrine system, which is the set of organs and tissues responsible for secreting hormones in the body. This specialty above treats and diagnoses diseases derived from hormonal malfunction.

Hormones are also known as the body's chemical messengers; through them, processes and functions of the body are regulated. Hormones generally originate in a specific organ and are then released into the bloodstream with a particular destination, where they cause a specific action in the receiving organ. However, paracrine hormones act at a shorter distance, and autocrine hormones act where they originate. The functions of hormones are of three types:

  • Stimulants. Prolactin is a stimulant hormone responsible for activating breastfeeding in women who have just given birth.
  • Inhibitory. Somatostatin is a hormone responsible, among other things, for inhibiting the production of growth hormones in the body.
  • With a Tropic effect. When a hormone is generated to alter the metabolism of another endocrine tissue.

The imbalances generated in the endocrine system, even the smallest, can cause decompensation in the body's chemical balance.

Some of the conditions that are treated in Endocrinology are:

  • Acromegaly
  • Mellitus diabetes
  • Addison’s disease
  • Cushing's disease
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Hypothyroidism
