Gastroenterology

"We must ask for a healthy spirit in a healthy body"

Tenth June Youth.

Gastroenterology is the medical specialty in charge of studying the digestive system's normal function, including the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts, and liver, well as diagnosing and treating any condition that compromises correct functionality of said organs.

Likewise, a gastroenterologist is a doctor with the power to perform endoscopies, which is one of the main ways of diagnosing conditions through a probe known as an endoscope with a camera at its tip. The endoscope is inserted through the mouth (panendoscopy) or the anus (colonoscopy) so that images of the organs are collected, seeking to find abnormalities that suggest the presence of diseases.

In addition to diagnosing, certain conditions can be done through endoscopes such as ERCP, tumor removal without surgery, and placement of internal drainage tubes.

Some of the conditions that a gastroenterologist can treat include:

  • Cancer (in any of the organs it treats)
  • Hepatic cirrhosis
  • Colitis
  • Diverticulitis
  • Crohn's disease
  • Viral hepatitis
  • Hernias
  • Biliary lithiasis
  • Reflux
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Peptic ulcer
