Internal Medicine

“Your body is the temple of nature and the divine spirit, keep it healthy, respect it, study it and grant it its rights.”

Henri-Frederic Amiel

This medical specialty comprehensively cares for health problems that occur in adult patients.

Many people don't understand the role of an internist, and, consequently, patients are usually referred by a General Practitioner.

An Internist can tend to the symptoms and underlying conditions of an adult patient with greater precision than a General Practitioner since they specialize precisely in the age ranges of the adult patient, which can be determinants to diagnose a condition with certainty.

We could look for an equivalence where from 1 to 18 years old, a patient is considered a minor and therefore is treated by a Pediatrician; from 19 years onwards, the doctor who attends to an illness should be an Internist.

Additionally, an internist isolates a condition to an organ and identifies the impact that this may have on the rest of the patient's systems, which is why its management is considered holistic and comprehensive. At least once a year, it is recommended to visit the Internist to review our general health.
