Myopia progression and prevention

24/08/2022 Ophtalmology

Myopia is currently considered a risk factor for the development of various eye diseases such as cataracts, retinal detachment, glaucoma, growth of abnormal blood vessels in the eye (choroidal neovascularization), or conditions that affect the central part of the retina, causing loss of central vision (myopic maculopathy).

Myopia tends to increase mainly between 6 and 15 years of age, and it has been shown that there is a higher incidence in people whose parents are myopic and people who spend long periods doing activities such as reading, computer use, and video games. People older than 15 years of age have a moderate progression depending on their daily activities.

It is important to mention that the reason why these activities contribute to the onset or progression of myopia is because of focusing and adjustment issues; that is why depending on the origin, there are different treatment methods for the prevention and progression of myopia. It is essential to highlight and keep in mind that using an incorrect prescription can increase myopia.

Methods of prevention and control in the progression of myopia include calculated near lenses, calculated progressive lenses, optical hypo-correction, orthokeratology (which is the fitting of customized contact lenses that shape the cornea during the night, compensate the prescription and allow you to see well during the day) and multifocal contact lenses.
