Preventive Check-Ups. 3 Reasons why you should do it

18/01/2023 General Medicine
  • INCREASE YOUR LIFE EXPECTANCY.

At Costamed, we always recommend preventive medicine as the best, especially considering that in Mexico, the primary diseases that cause death are related to heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and liver disease, all of which are preventable.

Additionally, there is also a high rate of cerebrovascular and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases.

If you perform periodic check-ups, you can identify critical indicators predisposing you to develop diseases just in time to make lifestyle modifications or start treatment.

  • YOU CAN CATCH THE SILENT DISEASES

In line with the previous point, these diseases are silent at the beginning; that is to say, they do not present symptoms, and it is only when the disease has already advanced that it manifests itself.

A clear example of this is breast cancer, the most frequent disease in women in Mexico and the first cause of death, according to the IMSS data from 2020. In the initial stages, it is detectable by imaging studies (mastography, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance) with a tumor size of less than 1 cm. To a lesser extent, by touch, a specialized physician can identify some tumors. By the time a woman manages to feel it in the shower, it is a significantly larger tumor.

The survival rate for a cancer detected at a size of less than 1 cm is at least 5 years cancer-free, over 90%, with a less aggressive treatment, even if it is a violent type of cancer. This data decreases drastically to a 5-year cancer-free survival of 65% to 90%  with aggressive treatment (chemotherapy).

  • SIGNIFICANT SAVINGS

Finally, it will always be cheaper to have a check-up and follow the doctor's recommendations than to start a treatment to battle a condition, considering medications, procedures, and even surgery that may be required depending on what you are combating.

The body carries natural wear and tear, and our bodies begin to require attention; if we add to this the bad habits that we all can have, such as smoking, drinking, and an unbalanced diet, it is more than certain that diseases will develop sooner than expected.

The periodicity of the check-ups varies from patient to patient, considering their gender, habits, and age; however, we recommend having them done at least once a year.
